Digitally remastered copy of Nirvana's iconic album, Nevermind.
B-SIDES
Nevermind offered up four singles, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “Lithium” and “In Bloom,” that in total offered up 9 unique B-sides for fans to collect around the world. Long out of print and unavailable for fans to get their hands on, these rare B-sides are brought back to life with digital remastering on the 20th Anniversary 2CD Deluxe and 4CD+1DVD Super Deluxe Editions of Nevermind. Three tracks are studio cuts consisting of “Even In His Youth,” “Aneurysm” and “Curmudgeon,” while three tracks are live performances of “Been A Son,” “School,” and “Drain You” from the 1991 Paramount Theatre concert, along with two additional live performances of “Sliver” and “Polly” from the 1991 Del Mar concert. The last collectible B-side is from the October 1990 John Peel Session at the BBC, a cover of “D-7” by the influential Pacific Northwest punk band The Wipers.
SMART STUDIO SESSIONS
In April of 1990, Nirvana, with Chad Channing on drums, started planning their follow-up album to Bleach. After several producer suggestions, the band decided on Butch Vig and made their way to Madison, Wisconsin for a five day recording session. After recording eight songs, the band ran out of studio funds and took a break with the notion of returning to Smart Studios to finish recording. Within a few months the band decided to use these recordings as a demo tape to shop for a new label which eventually landed them a deal with DGC. The recording of “Polly” from this session would eventually appear on Nevermind. Several other songs like “In Bloom,” “Lithium” and “Breed” (originally titled “Immodium”) from this session were re-worked and re-recorded with Dave Grohl on drums and appear on the final version of Nevermind.
BOOMBOX REHEARSALS
In the Spring of 1991, after signing with DGC, Nirvana started to plan their first major label release. After writing and laying down some new tracks with Butch Vig at Smart Studios almost a year earlier, the band had a new drummer in Dave Grohl and written eight new songs which they recorded onto a boombox during a rehearsal session as a demo for Butch to hear before officially going into the studio to record what would become Nevermind. These demos highlight the early nature of songwriting of soon to be iconic Nirvana songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are” and “Something In The Way.”
BBC SESSIONS
Many iconic musicians like Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Bob Marley have entered the BBC studios and recorded sessions that went on to become classic renditions of fan favorites or brand new, highly collectable rarities, and Nirvana was no exception. Nirvana appeared in four BBC sessions many of which have been previously released as B-sides, on the With The Lights Out boxset or compilations, but two tracks “Drain You” and “Something In The Way” are now available officially for the first time on the 20th Anniversary 2CD Deluxe and 4CD+1DVD Super Deluxe Editions for Nevermind. “Drain You” was recorded during the band’s September 1991 John Peel session along with “Dumb” and “Endless, Nameless.” “Something In The Way” was recorded during Mark Goodier’s session with the band in November of 1991 along with ”Polly,” “Been A Son” and “Aneurysm.” Both “Drain You” and “Something In The Way” originally broadcasted on BBC radio in November of 1991.
THE DEVONSHIRE MIXES
Upon completion of recording the seminal album Nevermind, Butch Vig started to mix the tracks, but both he and the band found themselves dissatisfied with how the mixes turned out and shelved those master tapes. The band ran through a list of potential mixers and all mutually agreed on Andy Wallace (who had co-produced Slayer’s Season In The Abyss album). The Devonshire Mixes by Butch Vig, available for the first time and only in this 20th Anniversary 4CD+1DVD Super Deluxe for Nevermind, offer an altogether new perspective on the finished album without the various special effects boxes and tweaked drum sounds that Andy Wallace’s final mixes presented.
LIVE AT THE PARAMOUNT
Five weeks after releasing what was to become the seminal album of a generation, Nirvana was on a nationwide club and small theatre tour that brought them to Seattle’s Paramount Theatre for a very special Halloween 1991 homecoming show. Launching the nineteen song set with a brilliant cover of the Vaselines’ “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam,” the band tears through Nevermind hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Lithium” and “Breed,” plus earlier favorites like “School,” “Love Buzz” and “About A Girl” and a very early version of “Rape Me.” The Paramount concert is the only show ever shot of the band on 16mm film and has been mixed in 5.1 surround sound and stereo from the original multi-tracks. Witness the complete concert for the first time ever, Nirvana – Live At The Paramount, will be also available on stand-alone DVD, Blu-ray and digital download video formats. The Paramount concert CD is available exclusively in the 20th Anniversary 4CD+1DVD Super Deluxe for Nevermind.
